He later spent 5 years in the U.S Coast Guard eventually becoming a Coxswain/Boating Safety Officer/Executive Officer. He then enrolled in Bible college, eventually earning a B.A.in Religion from Eastern Nazarene College. He later earned a Graduate certificate in Management from Harvard Extension. Rachel Rios, RN
Rachel lives in Palm Coast, along with another NFC member, her mother Eunice Rios who introduced her to the organization. After graduating with a bachelors in biology in 1986, she worked in a genetic research lab when she realized it would be a life of near poverty and little free time for church, Christian fellowship, or volunteerism. All three are important to her because she comes from a family of nurses and missionaries. She completed a 2nd bachelor’s degree in Nursing in just 2 years at the University of North Carolina in 1993, after which she joined the Army. She was an Army nurse for 3 years at Womack Army Hospital in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Afterwards, she worked in various cardiology step down units in 3 eastern states as a traveling nurse. She settled in Florida, where her parents live. After working at Orlando Regional Medical Center, she had a stroke in 2001, requiring brain sugery. With God’s help and direction, she climbed back into patient care, first with hospice, then with pediatric home health.
Virginia Jordan, RN
Board Member
Is retired after 24 years of nursing and resides in Plant City Florida. She went into nursing as a second career and after starting a family. She worked most of her nursing career in intensive care, cardiac testing and in cardiac rehab. Her main focus is serving Jesus and joined nurses for Christ as a nursing student and became a board member in 2017. Jenny believes that God put her in nursing not only to serve others but to supply for her future needs. Jenny got robbed at gunpoint when she was working as a fast food shift manager. That is when her husband Jerry insisted that she change careers. With two children still in middle School, she went back to school and became a nurse. Then just 5 year later she lost her husband in a car accident. As a widow for 6 yr, God used nursing to bless her emotionally, spiritually, and financially. She loves the Lord and has served Him since childhood.
Velma Teems, RN
Board Member
Hello, my name is Velma Teems. My home is in Frostproof, Florida and I am a native Floridian. I attended Polk Vocational in Lakeland, Florida for my LPN Degree and Polk Community College for my RN Degree. Most of my career was in Long Term Care Facilities. I started as CNA and worked my way up to the Director of Nursing position. I was the DON for several facilities and finished my working career as the DON for six years at The Crossroads in Davenport, Florida. My nursing career started in 1971 as a Nursing Aide and I retired as an RN in 2017.
I was introduced to Nurses for Christ in 1998 by Susan LaMore who was also an RN. I met Susan during a very dark and difficult time in my life. She invited me to attend a weekend Nurses for Christ conference and I was totally won over by this group of nurses! I had lots of nurse friends but these ladies/gentlemen were different! They had a love for Christ, a love for each other & a love for their profession. I couldn’t help but to fall in love with the founder of this group, Hazel Hetrick, who was and is an amazing servant of God. These nurses ministered to me throughout that whole weekend & I came home rejuvenated as never before. Needless to say I soon became a member myself. I am honored to be a Board Member and I look forward to what God has in store this Spirit filled organization.
